The light between buildings

Why the most interesting part of a street is sometimes the space left open.

Light turns the edges of familiar buildings into a changing composition. A doorway that seems flat at midday becomes a deep shape in late afternoon. The street stays the same; the way we notice it does not.

Try walking the same short route at two different hours. Look at the line where shade meets a wall. Notice how a pale surface reflects light into a narrow passage, and how the smallest opening can make an otherwise ordinary facade feel generous.

Make space for a second look.

Rather than collecting landmarks, collect relationships: the distance between two windows, a tree against a blank wall, a bright rectangle beneath a dark roof. A good frame often begins with something that is missing.
